According to the recent government estimates, approximately 21 lakh individuals are living with HIV/AIDS in India. The adult prevalence is on the range of 0.3% of which 40% are women. Though the prevalence of HIV has been decreasing but there are regional variations which reflect the disturbing trends. Four states - Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu account for about 55% of the total cases in the country.
